Becoming a Trustee Benefits you and the Community

 What Motivates You?

  • Gaining new skills and experiences for your personal career development?
  • Sharing your expertise with other or younger professionals?
  • Giving back to your community?

You can satisfy these types of ambitions and gain numerous benefits and experiences by joining our board of Trustees.

As leisure, sport and arts sectors reopen, adapt and evolve to new and emerging health, social and economic circumstances after the Covid-19 pandemic lockdown, we are seeking a new group of Trustees for our future development.

As a registered charitable and social enterprise, we are committed to helping communities in North Yorkshire and the Midlands, where we provide leisure and culture services on behalf of and in partnership with local authority clients. Any surplus generated is invested back into improving facilities and services for the benefit of communities.

Good governance is essential for the success of our services, facilities and people. Our board of trustees helps to deliver this. But individual trustees also benefit in many ways from the experience on the board.

  • Being part of a board of trustees can help develop CVs, provide valuable experience and enhance their career learning.
  • Sharing your industry experience, insight, skills and connections can help develop and enhance our community impact and social value.

Board Opportunities

A number of our long-serving, experienced Trustees are moving on this summer. We are revising and reforming our governance and will have a new smaller board of Trustees. This is a great opportunity to gain valuable experience and contribute to community leisure and culture sectors.

We’ll be holding quarterly Trustee board meetings, probably with two online and two physical meetings in alternate locations. We also have three audit committee meetings per year. Trustees receive out of pocket expenses such as travel expenses.

We are searching for Trustees who will collectively bring a range of skills, experience and interests and represent the communities we serve in Selby and Cannock Chase. Candidates with specialisms in:

  • Audit
  • finance
  • IT
  • Health
  • Education
  • Local authority
  • Arts or heritage

The Benefits of Being a Trustee

Jennifer Meadows, former Great Britain athlete, World and European medallist:

“I wanted to become a Trustee to give something back the sports and leisure community in my hometown who supported me so fantastically during my athletics career. I have loved every minute of it but the experience has also helped me learn so much that continues to help me in my personal and career development beyond athletics.”

Businessman Darren Wood:

“When I first joined IHL as a Trustee it was about giving something back. Using the experience, I had gained in the business world and applying it to the charitable sector. Little did I know the last 2 and half years has been better than any training, textbooks, universities or an MBA could offer. With IHL every aspect of the leisure sector and beyond is covered, even spanning multiple territories. I cannot think of any other role at any other organisation where you would make vital decisions in such a complex environment with real life outcomes.  I actually feel indebted to the organisation because I have covered every aspect of a board, that has given me real life experience to help in my personal career. If you want to grown, develop and give something back then I would not hesitate to recommend you apply for to be a trustee. The only thing you'll regret is not having done it sooner.”

Resident and customer Emma Wetherby BA (hons), MSc:

"Following my decision to take a career break to focus on my primary school aged children, I was keen to take on a Non Executive voluntary role to continue to support my personal and professional development.  As a local resident and customer, I feel my contribution, perspective and passion for what the customer and communities need has been sought and welcomed by the Trust. In addition I have learned so much about how charitable organisations work and the fantastic results that Inspiring healthy lifestyles deliver to support both physical and mental wellbeing for so many people."
